The personal testimony of Pastor Venable. I was 16 years old when I accepted Christ as my Savior. Here is my story.
1. Recognize your condition and your need of the Savior Jesus Christ.
I realized that I was a sinner even before I was saved. Even though our family did not attend church I knew that there were things in my life that were not always pleasing to God. Then I learned that according to Romans 3:23 all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God. I had no argument with this verse.
2. Realize the penalty for sin.
I learned that according to Romans 6:23 the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. I knew one day I would die but I never connected death to my sins. Now I realized that one day I would have to stand before a holy God and be held accountable. But, here is the good news, eternal life is the gift of God; I wanted that gift!
3. Believe Christ died for you.
Romans 5:8 tells us…But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. I never knew this. I never knew that Christ died for me. Why did He die for me?
Romans 5:10 tells us…For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. Wow, God sent His Son to die for me that I might be reconciled to Him! But how does this reconciliation take place?
4. Trust Christ alone as your Savior.
Now we learn that whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
At 16 years old I realized I was a sinner, that my sin would separate me from God for all eternity but that God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die for me. Now it was up to me to call upon Him and His promise; you will be saved.
I did that! At 16 years old I called upon Jesus Christ and He saved me. I prayed a prayer similar to this one…
Dear Jesus, I know I’m a sinner. Please forgive me for my sins. Jesus, come into my
heart and save my soul from Hell. I’m trusting you, and you alone, to take me to Heaven when I die. Thank you for saving me, Jesus. Amen.
5. What is keeping people out of heaven today?
For some it’s the simple pleasure of sin, for many it’s just not a convenient time, and for others it’s trusting in their own good works. Yet the Lord tells us… Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us. (Titus 3:5)
Would you put your trust in Christ today and be saved?
